The Dragon's Breath: Processing Difficult Emotions

The Dragon's Breath: Processing Difficult Emotions

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a situation or its attached negative emotions? It's completely normal to experience a range of feelings, but sometimes it can be challenging to process them. One effective technique that many people find helpful is free writing and giving it to the dragon's breath. This simple yet powerful exercise can help you navigate through your emotions and gain clarity. Let's dive into how you can use the dragon's breath technique to process negative emotions.

What is Free Writing?

Free writing is a technique where you write continuously without worrying about grammar, spelling, or structure. The goal is to let your thoughts flow freely without any constraints. This process allows you to access your subconscious mind and express your emotions without judgment.

How to Get Started

Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can be alone with your thoughts. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes to give yourself a designated time frame. Start writing about whatever comes to mind, without censoring or editing yourself. Let your emotions guide your words and write without any restrictions.

The Benefits of Free Writing

Free writing can be a cathartic experience that helps you release pent-up emotions. By putting your thoughts on paper, you can gain a deeper understanding of your feelings and uncover insights that may have been buried. This process can be incredibly liberating and empowering.

Remember, the goal of free writing is not to produce a polished piece of writing, but rather to explore your emotions and thoughts. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and honest in your writing, as this can lead to profound self-discovery and emotional healing.

The Dragon's Breath

  • Allow the hard, sludgy, sticky, unpleasant to surface through your pencil and paper.
  • Choose an iron cauldron, or other heatproof bowl and a safe place.
  • Change the shape of your paper with your emotions: ball it, tear it, stomp...whatever captures your fancy at the time.
  • Ignite the remaining paper in your heatproof vessel and give it up to the "dragon's breath."
  • As you watch until it is cold, take deep cleansing breaths yourself and feel the heaviness drifting away with the smoke.

Utilize this technique as part of your ceremony or rituals, or simply when needed.
